Abstract
Background: Diabetes is associated with a twofold to fivefold increase in the risk of heart failure, independent of hypertension, body mass index or coronary disease. The American College of Cardiology-American Heart Association recommendations for diagnosis and management of heart failure classify patient who have diabetes (but no obvious myocardial structural abnormalities) as stage A «pre-heart failure» patients and urge clinicians to try to prevent the development of overt or manifest LV systolic and diastolic dysfunction.
