The effect of physical activity, dietary habits and lifestyle on the prevalence of abesity in school-aged students

Abstract

Epidemiological studies worldwide confirm a rapid increase in body fatness in young population. Recent studies show that young population in Greece is the most obese in Europe and one of the most obese in the world. The purpose of this epidemiological study was to record the prevalence of obesity in school-aged children and adolescents and to evaluate the obesity origins, interpreting at the same time, students’ social factors, lifestyle, their habitual physical activity and their eating behaviors in the family and school environment as well as during their leisure time activities. The present study was carried out in Greece in randomly selected 19 primary schools, 13 junior high schools and 8 high schools.
