Education for sustainable development in preschool: design, implementation and evaluation of a learning environment with a knowledge framework in Biology
Abstract
This PhD study aims at exploring the possibility of designing a learning environment that could effectively support preschool children in (a) building basic ecological knowledge, and (b) getting familiar with the idea of sustainability as well as other socio-environmental ideas that could contribute to the enhancement of children’s environmental and social awareness. The study follows the ‘educational design research method’. So, it starts with an ‘exploratory phase’ during which we designed the first version of the learning environment. The design was informed by three approaches that are integrated in the broader theoretical framework of ‘constructivism’: (a) the ‘possible future’ approach, (b) the ‘problem seekers - problem solvers - action takers’ approach, and (c) the ‘problem posing’ approach.
