Psycho-pedagogical dimensions of the relationship between the family and the kindergarten: study of the parental involvement and the factors that may influence its expressions

Abstract

The present study elaborates on the issue of parental involvement, with reference to the Greekmothers’ behaviors, when their child attends the public kindergarten. It focuses on the structure ofparental involvement in an attempt to clarify the term and to highlight the influence of some basicfactors. The second refers to the impact of the ecological factors on its expressions. An ecosystemicapproach is applied to investigate the functioning of parental involvement, focusing on the family andkindergarten microsystems as well as the mesosystem between them. On the basis of the UrieBronfenbrenner’s ecological theory and Super and Harkness’s theoretical model of the“developmental niche” the study describes the child’s “educational niche”. It concerns a model thatdelineates the processes of the family and school dynamics that guide the child’s educationalexperiences.
