The function of special education elementary schools in Thrace: a sociological approach

Abstract

In light of the recent socio-economic conditions in our country and the resulting reductions in education funds it is necessary to carry out an updated and systematic study on the operation of Special Education and Training elementary schools in the region of Thrace, within which the schooling of children with disabilities is realized. The aim of this PhD dissertation is to investigate the operation of the eight (8) Special Education elementary schools in Thrace, through the assessment of teacher-student as well as teacher-parent relationships. Hence, this study focuses on the understanding of the working mechanisms of this particular educational institution through the social interactions of the involved participants. This study was carried out using mixed methods research, including both quantitative and qualitative approaches for the collection and analysis of data.
