Children’s emotional intelligence in relation to classroom climate and academic achievement

Abstract

Trait emotional intelligence is a constellation of emotion-related self-perceptions and dispositionscomprising the affective aspects of personality. The present study aimed at investigating trait emotionalintelligence of school-age children (preadolescents). Specifically, the relation between trait emotionalintelligence and two dimensions of children’s lives at school – academic achievement (cognitivedimension) and classroom climate (emotional dimension) – was examined. Participants were 449 fifthandsixth-grade students from 17 randomly selected public primary schools in Athens, the capital ofGreece (276 girls and 223 boys; 224 fifth graders and 275 sixth graders). Students completed the Greekadaptations of (a) Trait Emotional Intelligence–Child Short Form (http://www.psychometriclab.com),and (b) Classroom Life Measure (Johnson & Johnson, 1983.
