An illustration of the relationship between benchmarking and TQM through the investigation of benchmarking application within ISO 9000 certified quality systems

Abstract

This thesis investigates both theoretically and empirically the connection between benchmarking and quality concepts, and more specifically between the principles of benchmarking and the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM). Benchmarking is renowned as a modern business tool, which has been initiated by and expanded in conjunction with the spread of quality movement. Bibliographical research has revealed that the extent of application of quality principles within an enterprise is strongly associated with the extent of application of benchmarking, while commitment to the principles of quality assurance is usually set as a minimum requirement for benchmarking adoption. The relationship of benchmarking with the TQM principles is bibliographically determined by two approaches: (a) benchmarking is an integral part and important tool of TQM, and (b) TQM is the key prerequisite for successful implementation of benchmarking.
