The objective of the present study was to assess body condition score (BCS) changes by palpation, in different breeds of dairy sheep, with the parallel application of two more objective techniques; ultrasonography and blood metabolic indicators. In the first part of the study, the selected ewes were purebred animals from the four main dairy sheep breeds reared in Greece: Chios (8), Frizarta (8), Lacaune (7) and Assaf.E (7). Ewes were subjected to specific feeding treatments across the trial period (6 weeks of fattening and 4 weeks of fasting period). The following measurements were performed on a weekly basis; body weight (BW) measurement, assessment of BCS by palpation and backfat (BFT) and longissimus dorsi muscle (LDT) thickness determination by ultrasound. The measurements of BFT and LDT revealed two more variables, the sum of BFT and LDT (TotalT) and the ratio LDT: BFT (RatioT). During the fasting period, the weekly changes of BCS (Δ_BCS), BFT (Δ_BFT), LDT (Δ_LDT) and TotalΤ (Δ_Tot ...
