Archimandrite Parthenios Kelaides (1830-1905): ecclesiastical and national activity

Abstract

The present doctoral thesis refers to the Ecclesiastical and National of the Cretan priest Parthenios Kelaides, who lived during the period 1830-1905. He was born in the village Mouri of Sfakia municipality. Later, he became a monk and member of the brotherhood in Gonia Monastery. During the same period, when a plethora of revolutions took place, Archimandrite Parthenios Kelaides was a leading figure. He took part and leaded to all revolutions and movements in Crete, between the years 1858 and 1898. In this new era, when the idea of national states started to dominate throughout the Balkania Peninsula, under the principles of Enlightenment, while in the same time the status quo of multireligious empires was under a great dispute, Parthenios hesitated between Crete’s autonomy and its direct incorporation to the Greek national state of Athens.
