High school (lykeio) and tutoring (frontistirio) on students access to greek higher education: views of secondary educators

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to examine the views of secondary educators/teachers regarding factors that influence students’ decision in Greece to attend “frontistirio”. In addition, this study attempted to explore why the state has been unable to eliminate this phenomenon despite repeated announcements to the contrary and the ways in which it might be possible the “frontistirio” to stop being considered essential by parents and students. Using a survey, 785 teachers from 75 high schools (“lykeia”) in the two largest cities of Greece (Athens and Thessaloniki) participated in the study. Findings showed that increased chances of entering tertiary education was identified by school teachers as the most important reason for students resorting to “frontistirio”.
