The large scale rhodian sculpture of hellenistic and roman times
Abstract
Τhe present study presents the large-scale Rhodian sculpture of the Hellenistic and Roman period through the publication of sixty unpublished sculptures οf life size or larger than life size, together with forty-five sculptures already published. The sculptures are studied and grouped according to their statuary type (gods, mortals and portraits), while for certain of them their secure identification is problematic due to their fragmentary condition, so they are grouped in the category of “uncertain identification”. In the first category heads and statues of Aphrodite, Asclepius, Attis, Helios, Athena, Apollonian and Dionysiac figures and a bust of an underworld goddess are presented. In the second category female portrait statues of the types of Pudicitia, Small Herculaneum woman, Polla Valeria and of the type with the himation roll under the chest are examined.
