The thesis focuses both on formulating a general design theory for linear closed loop control systems (despite the process complexity) and the development of a heuristic procedure towards the automatic tuning of PID type controllers. In general, the problem of designing a controller has two sights. We call the first sight of the problem the direct form and we focus on determining analytically the controller parameters in case where an exact model of the process is available. The other sight of designing a controller, called indirect form, focuses on solving exactly the opposite problem. How can a controller be tuned automatically when a crude model of the controlled process is available? This issue is very often met in many industry applications and is called, the automatic tuning of regulators, tuning 'on demand' or 'one shot' tuning. We focus initially on defining an optimal control theory for type-I,II,III,… closed loop control systems despite the process complexity. By saying optim ...
By saying optimal, we refer to perfect disturbance rejection both at the input and the output of the controlled process. For the derivation of the proposed control law, we make use of a general process model defined in the frequency domain, consisting of m zeros, n poles plus unknown time delay. For the development of the proposed theory, PID regulators are employed, which finally prove to act efficiently even for large scale processes. The proposed optimal control law is extracted with the aid of the well known 'Magnitude Optimum' criterion. Its purpose is to render the magnitude of the frequency response of the closed loop control system as close as possible to unity in the widest possible frequency range. The revision of the classical design procedure (design via pole-zero cancellation) via the magnitude optimum criterion reveals its strong privilege to handle processes despite their complexity. However, the classical design procedure is thoroughly revised since, for reasons explained throughout the thesis, proves to end up with suboptimal results as far as disturbance rejection is concerned. For that reason, the classical design procedure is abandoned and a new systematic design procedure is proposed. Furthermore, the application of the proposed optimal design procedure to a large scale of processes reveals its advantage to determine the optimal type of the regulator for the controlled process. For that reason, the proposed theory answers when a process needs I or PI control and when the derivative (D) term has to be added or omitted. This property is general and is observed despite the type (type-I, II, III) of the closed loop control system. Moreover, after applying the optimal control law to a large number of processes, we come up with an interesting property of the proposed design method called, 'the shape conservation of the closed loop control system response'. The latter fundamental property is observed both in the time and frequency domain. In that, it constitutes the guide for the formulation of a heuristic algorithm towards the automatic tuning of PID type controllers. In other words, controller parameters are tuned in such a way so that the final closed loop system response exhibits the specific observed form. The proposed systematic tuning procedure assumes that access to the process states is not possible, as it frequently happens in many industry applications. The only measurable variable is considered the process output. For the algorithm startup, we need only an open loop experiment of the process. The strong potential of the proposed theory is justified through simulation results for any type of closed control system (type-I, II, III) and for any type of process, (non-minimum phase plants, plants with large dead time etc.)
