A SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE SYMMETRY OF THE COINCIDENCE SITE LATTICE (CSL) HAS BEEN MADE. A METHOD HAS BEEN DEVELOPED ALLOWING THE DETERMINATION OF THE SYMMETRYGROUP OF THE CSL INDEPENDENTLY FROM THE CRYSTAL SYSTEM. THE METHOD IS BASED ONTHE PROPERTIES OF THE ROTATION MATRIX PRODUCING A CSL AND ON THE EQUIVALENT DESCRIPTIONS OF ONE AND THE SAME CSL. SOME APPLICATIONS HAVE BEEN GIVEN CONCERNING CUBIC, HEXAGONAL AND RHOMBOHEDRAL SYSTEM AND A CLASSIFICATION OF THE CSLS OF THE CUBIC AND THE HEXAGONAL ((C/A)2=M/N=1) SYSTEM ACCORDING TO THEIR SYMMETRY HAS BEEN MADE. FINALLY A METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE CSL AND THE DSC- LATTICE BASE, BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SYMMETRY OF THE CSL, HAS BEEN MADE. THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SYMMETRY OF THE CSL HAS BEEN USED IN ORDER TO IMPOSE CONDITIONS TO THE COMPUTATIONAL CELL WHICH SIMPLIFY THE COMPUTATIONS IN THE CASE OF COMPUTER SIMULATION OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE INTERFACE.
