INTERCROPPING: AS A WAY TO INCREASE CROP YIELDS AND NITROGEN USE EFFICIENCY
Abstract
THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS RESEARCH WERE TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF 1) COMPONENT AND TOTAL POPULATIONS ON THE GROWTH, YIELDS AND FORAGE AND GRAIN QUALITIES OF MAIZE/SOYABEAN MIXTURES, 2) INOCULATING SOYABEAN SEEDS WITH RHIZOBIUM JAPONICUM AND NITROGEN FERTILIZATION ON THE YIELDS OF MAIZE/SOYABEAN MIXTURES AND 3)NITROGEN FERTILIZATION ON THE BIOMASS AND SEED YIELDS OF BARLEY/VETCH MIXTURES. A MODIFIED FACTORIAL DESIGN WITH FOUR REPLICATIONS WAS USED IN THE FIRST EXPERIMENT IN 1984. THERE WERE 15 TREATMENTS COMPRISING THREE PURE STANDS OF MAIZE AT 4,7 AND 10 PLANTS/M2 AND THREE PURE STANDS OF SOYABEANS AT 16, 28 AND 40PLANTS/M2 AND 9 MIXTURES FORMED FACTORIALLY AND SPECIES WERE SHOWN AT HALF THE POPULATIONS OF PURE STANDS. IN THE SECOND YEAR THE EXPERIMENT WAS MODIFIED INTO A SPLIT-PLOT WITH FOUR REPLICATIONS.
