STUDY ON MORPHOLOGY AND BIOECOLOGY OF THE PREDATOR INSECT RHYZOBIUS LOPHANTHAE BLAISDELL (COLEOPTERA: COCCINELLIDAE), NATURAL ENEMY OF SCALES OF THE DIASPIDIDAE (HOMOPTERA: COCCOIDEA) FAMILY, IN GREECE
Abstract
THE PRESENT THESIS TREATS OF THE MORPHOLOGICAL (INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL), ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF RHYZOBIUS LOPHANTHAE BLAISDELL. AS FAR AS ECOLOGY IS CONCERNED, OBSERVATIONS MADE NOT ONLY IN NATURE, BUT ALSO WHEN REARING R.LOPHANTHAE IN CAGES OUTSIDE THE LABORATORY, SHOWED THAT THE INSECT REMAINS ACTIVE DURING THE WHOLE YEAR AND IT PRODUCED 6 GENERATIONS IN A YEAR. R.LOPHANTHAE INGREECE IS NOT INFESTED BY HYMENOPTERA PARASITOIDS WHICH INFEST OTHER NATIVE PREDATORS OF THE FAMILY COCCINELLIDAE. THE BIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF R.LOPHANTHAE THAT HAVE BEEN STUDIED ARE THE INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE ON THE INSECTS DEVELOPMENT, ITS FECUNDITY AND ITS VORACITY. THE LOW TEMPERATURE THRESHOLD CALCULATED FOR EACH INCOMPLETE DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE. THESE RANGED FROM 7,6 TO 9,3C DEGREES. THE AVERAGE FECUNDITY WAS FOUND TO BE 633,7+-199,7 EGGS PER FEMALE.
