Chord consonance/dissonance: chord representation and perceptual parameters in the context of tonal and non-tonal harmonic idioms

Abstract

The present dissertation examines the employment of consonance/dissonance (henceforth C/D) as a means to represent harmony, and studies the ways C/D is perceived by listeners within tonal and non-tonal context. Depending on the harmonic environment, simultaneities can be represented and encoded using Roman numerals, chord letter-symbols used in jazz and pop, or pitch class sets in non-tonal music. The General Chord Type (GCT) (Cambouropoulos, 2015; Cambouropoulos et al., 2014) is a general idiom-independent chord encoding schema which relies on a binary classification of C/D (1 for consonant and 0 for dissonant intervals); this representation is the starting point and inspiration for this dissertation.
