3D printing of blends of chitosan and its derivatives for controlled drug release
Abstract
It is commonly accepted that delivery of drug compounds on the skin provides a more convenient and preferable route of administration. Natural derived polymers are appealing materials for many applications, including dermal patches, due to their excellent properties. However, natural polymers have drawbacks which can be overcome through chemical modification of the natural polymers as well as the formation of polymeric blends. Among natural polysaccharides, chitosan (CS) is a polymeric material extensively used in drug delivery systems, mainly owing to its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an innovative and very promising technology for the production of complex structures, which can find many applications in the biomedical field and pharmaceutical technology.
