IN THIS STUDY THE AQUEOUS ETHAND FRACTIONATION OF THE THREE MAIN CHEMICAL COMPONENTS OF WHEAT STRAW INTO CELLULOSIC FIBRES (SOLID RESIDUE OF THE TREATMENT), HEMICELLULOSIC SUGAR OLIGO - AND MONOMERS AND LINGIN OLIGOMERS (SOLUBLE IN THE AQUEOUS EHTANOL) WAS STUDIED. ACIDIC OR ALKALINE CONDITIONS WERE EMPLOYED AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE FRACTIONATION PROCESS IN ONE OR TWO STAGES WAS EVALUATED. UNDER ACIDIC CONDITIONS (H2SO4 2N) IN AQUEOUS ETHANOL 87.5% V/V CELLULOSE RETENTION IN THE PULP IS AS HIGH AS 90%, HEMICELLULOSE FRACTIONATION IS 61%AND LIGNIN FRACTIONATION REACHES 67%. FRACTIONATION SELECTIVITY (A PARAMETERWHICH INCORPORATES THE ABOVE MENTIONED COMPONENT MODIFICATIONS) INCREASES AT HIGH ETHANOL CONCENTRATIONS AND REACHES THE OPTIMUM VALUE OF 3.7. THE PULP IS PRODUCTED AT 60% YIELD, AT PULPING SELECTIVITY OF 4.9; THE KAPPA NUMBER OF THE PULP PRODUCED UNDER OPTIMAL SELECTIVITY CONDITIONS IS 60, THE BREAKING LENGTH 4.5 KM AND THE TEAR INDEX 1.9 MNM^2/G.
