English language teaching and certification in language centers or private lessons: the paradox of a social consensus
Abstract
This thesis attempts to contribute to the discussion about the teaching of English as a foreign language in the Greek context. It deals with issues related to the parallel teaching of the English language in state schools and in language centers called “frontistiria” or in private lessons. These issues are investigated through the lens of the Sociology of Education and Educational Policy in order to shed light on the meanings of choices of educational factors, parents, state school teachers of English as a foreign language and teachers of English as a foreign language in the private sector. Our research mainly focuses on parents and their persistent resort to supplementary private tutoring despite the expansion of the teaching of English in the early grades of primary school. What we particularly seek to identify is the consensus that lies beneath the choices of parents to the "socially sanctioned" (Castoriadis, 1985, in Tsakiri, 2018) role of “frontistiria” and private lessons.
