Music has the ability to evoke intense emotional responses to the listener. The factors that mediate these effects are multiple according to prior research and are related to the individual characteristics of the listener, the circumstances where music listening occurs and the features of the music. Music listening may occur willingly or not, in various everyday settings. Music is often used as background in order to induce a certain mood to the listener. Tempo of the musical pieces along with the degree of the listener’s familiarity with the musical material seem to be crucial for the effects of background music listening. In Greece there is no prior research on the effect of background music during school breaks regarding emotion and cognition.
