Leadership in relation to the five factor model: a study of school principals in primary and secondary education
Abstract
Authentic leadership is a leadership model that emerged in response to the financial and moral crisis which occurred at the turn of the century and affected businesses and organizations deeply (Gardner, Avolio, Luthans, May & Walumbwa, 2005). Authentic leadership is about the alignment between the core values and the actions of the leader. When the actions of the leader reflect his/her values with honesty and consistency, the team and the leader's followers perceive and appreciate it, resulting in achieving both the organizational and financial goals and the well-being of the employees (Begley, 2001). The authentic leader acts as a role model and a source of inspiration for the team and the followers, creating the conditions for attaining the goals (Northouse, 2010).The personality of the leader is an important parameter and essential antecedent for the development of leadership.
