Initiation and identity in the greek apprenticeship novel (1935-1949)
Abstract
The present dissertation is a study of the Greek apprenticeship novel (Bildungsroman) of the period 1935-1949. In particular, the research focuses on the characters that, consciously or unconsciously, have an initiating effect on the central adolescent heroes or heroines of novels, as well as on the forms of initiation, such as love, death, nature, art, literature and historical reality, aiming at analyzing the ways in which they influence the evolutionary course of the fictional young heroes / heroines towards adulthood and the formation of their individual identity. In total, eleven novels by male and female authors are analyzed, based on scientific theories from the fields of psychology, psychoanalysis, philosophy, social anthropology, and the theory of literature.
