Role of fibroblast growth factor 23 in metabolic bone disorder of patients with diabetic nephropathy
Abstract
Introduction: Fibroblast growth factor (FGF23) is a phosphatonin with an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases characterized by renal phosphorus loss. Ιn early stages of renal disease - before hyperphosphataemia occurs - FGF23 retains its phosphaturic action. In end-stage CKD, FGF23 levels are very elevated (often 100-1000 times above normal) and correlate with high levels of phosphorus in the serum. Medical studies have focused on FGF23, as elevated levels of FGF23 have been positively correlated with atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction, cardiac morbidity and mortality. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate fibroblast growth factor levels in patients with type 2 diabetic nephropathy and its association with biochemical markers of bone metabolism.
