The expression of manner in modern greek language: language - teaching approach with emphasis on primary education school textbooks

Abstract

The examination of the expressions that denote manner (in the broad sense of the term) and function as adjuncts is in the centre of this study. Therefore, we followed a functional and semantic model of analysis for the discrimination and classification of the expressions of manner. Furthermore, based on the speaker’s different communication needs we focused on the use of diverse linguistic means through which the manner can be expressed (adverbs and adverbial phrases, noun phrases, prepositional and participial phrases, subordinate clauses). The semantic category of manner is broad and includes various dimensions / meanings which relate to each other but do not coincide and, in general, they answer the interrogative how?.
