Antioxidant effect of carotenoids of Crocus Sativus Linneaus on bovine sperm quality parameters and in vitro fertilization

Abstract

The handling and culture of gametes and embryos in vitro renders them susceptible to high risk of oxidative stress, mainly due to their exposure in an environment with higher PO2 to that of the female genital tract. Oxidative stress is one the most important factors that contribute to poor semen quality and low rates of in vitro fertilization. Although, low and regulated amounts of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) are mandatory of crucial reproductive processes, such as capacitation and sperm-oocyte fusion, an imbalance between ROS and antioxidants in spermatozoa may result in loss of their structural integrity and functionality. For several decades, an intensive search for optimization of in vitro techniques has led to the employment of several antioxidants in the culture media, in order to counteract the negative effects of the ROS that are generated during these processes, on sperm quality and fertilizing capacity. Among these are extracts or compounds of the plant Crocus sativus L. (s ...
