A philosophy of eroticism in cinema: images of desire and Georges Bataille

Abstract

The aim of the thesis is the study of eroticism in cinema and, as part of a philosophical perspective, the exploration of the way eroticism is visualized in a group of films that understand the subject in a manner related to the thought of writer and philosopher Georges Bataille: From Bernardo Bertolucci’s "Last tango in Paris", whose director states that he was reading "Blue of Noon" while he was writing the film’s script, and Nagisa Oshima’s "In the Realm of the Senses", which is almost always linked to Story of the eye, to Liliana Cavani’s "The Night Porter" and Lars von Trier’s "Breaking the waves", both of which are increasingly connected by their scholars to Bataille, the main aim is a philosophical analysis of the films’ visual language and therefore an interpretation of their cinematic elements that synthesize the distinct character of their narratives.
