The Basileios Stoa and the synthesis of the monumental center of Constantinople: topography, functions, symbolisms
Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is the study of the topographical, functional and symbolical synthesis of the monumental center of Constantinople –the complex which surrounded the Sacred Palace– through the restoration of one of its most important monuments, the Basilica or Basileios Stoa, the seat of the higher education, the public Library, the Courts of justice and the Temple of Tyche. The monumental center of Constantinople is defined as an urban and symbolical space, the functional synthesis of which was affected by the tradition of the royal cities of the Greco-Roman world where monumental centers were located around the royal palaces housing important public functions. Moreover the Basileios Stoa is restored as the ancient ‘’Megiste Tetrastoos Agora’’ which was renamed and renovated during the reign of the Constantinian dynasty as the seat of higher education and justice.
