The meaning of breast cancer experience: a narrative study
Abstract
AbstractIn recent years emphasis has been placed on the study of the process of meaning-making of chronic and serious illness. In the context of breast cancer, from a narrative perspective, illness narratives are considered as the main means through which women attach meaning to their breast cancer experience. The present study aims to investigate the process of meaning making in the context of breast cancer through studying illness narratives. Specifically, we studied the content and the form of the illness narratives constructed by women, the interaction of the illness narratives with the women’s self narratives and with the broader cultural and social context in which narratives are constructed, with particular reference to the Greek society.Fifteen women participated in the study; participants had been diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer one to eight years prior to their participation and had no relapse or metastasis of cancer.
