STRUCTURE OF THE CRUST AND UPPER MANTLE IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE BY INVERSION OF SEISMIC AND GRAVIMETRIC DATA
Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THIS DISSERTATION IS TO INVERT TRAVEL TIMES OF P WAVES AND GRAVIMETRIC DATA FOR STUDYING THE CRUST AND UPPER MANTLE IN THE AREA (16'E-30'E, 34'N-43'N), WHICH INCLUDES THE AEGEAN SEA, GREECE, W. TURKEY, S. BOULGARIA, S.YUGOSLAVIA, ALBANIA, IONIAN SEA AND THE NORTHERNMOST PART OF THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN. IN THE FIRST PART, THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE TOMOGRAPHIC METHOD IS DISCUSSED AND THE CHANGES IN THE FORMULATION AND CERTAIN ALGORITHMS ARE PRESENTED. THESE CHANGES WERE NECESSARY IN ORDER TO ADOPT THE METHOD TO THE DIMENSIONS AND THE COMPLICATED TECTONIC CONDITIONS OF THE AREA UNDER STUDY. INFORMATION FOR 4,229 EARTHQUAKES OF THE PERIOD 1970-1987 RECORDED IN 327 STATIONS WERE USED IN THIS STUDY. 109,529 TRAVEL TIMES OF P WAVES WERE INVERTED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE HORIZONTAL VARIATIONS IN THE VELOCITY IN EIGHT LAYERS (0-10KM, 10-20KM, 20-30KM, 30-40KM, 40-60KM, 60-90KM, 90-120KM, 120-160KM) OF THE INVESTIGATED AREA.
