THE QUASI BIENNIAL OSCILLATION AND THE SOUTHERN OSCILLATION IN THE ATMOSPHERE
Abstract
THE AIM OF THE THESIS IS TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF THE QUASI BIENNIAL OSCILLATIONS (QBO) AND THE SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (SO), WHICH ARE CONSIDERED TO BE TWO OF THE MAJOR ATMOSPHERIC OSCILLATIONS WITH WORLDWIDE EFFECTS AT PERIODS GREATER THAN ONE YEAR, ON ATMOSPHERIC PARAMETERS BOTH IN THE STRATOSPHERE AND THE TROPOSPHERE. THE FIRST PART OF THE THESIS DEALS WITH THE STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF QBO AND THE SOUTHERN OSCILLATION ON THE VARIABILITY OF SURFACE AIR TEMPERATURE IN EUROPE AND THE MEDITERRANEAN, USING LONG TERM (OVER 100 YEARS) TIME SERIES FROM SURFACE METEOROLOGICAL STATIONS. VARIOUS STATISTICAL METHODS ARE USED AND THE PHYSICAL MECHANISMS INVOLVED ARE EXAMINED. IN THE SECOND PART OF THE THESIS, THE GLOBAL SCALE EFFECTS OF THESE TWO TROPICAL OSCILLATIONS ON THE MEAN TEMPERATURE OF ATMOSPHERIC LAYERS FROM THE TROPOSPHERE TO THE LOWER STRATOSPHERE, AS WELL AS ON THE VARIABILITY OF TOTAL OZONE ARE STUDIED.
