Social and emotional learning and perceived classroom climate in physical education

Abstract

Social and Emotional learning is the process during witch an individual learns how to perceive and manage emotions, to care about others, to monitor environmental changes and to make the right decisions (Elias et al. 1997). This kind of skills that have a significant contribution to academic success (Bloodworth et al. 2001), and individuals’ well being (Zins et al. 2001), are regarded as a kind of intelligence, something different from the IQ and the traits of personality (Bar-On, 1997; Goleman, 1995; Mayer & Salovey, 1997). The main purpose of the present study was the adaptation of the Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (EQ-I:YV, Bar-On & Parker, 2000), (an instrument measuring children’s’ and adolescents’ social-emotional intelligence), to Greek language and the examination of the relationships between social-emotional intelligence and other psychological factors in physical education class.
