AGGREGATION AND AGGREGATE STABILITY DEPENDENCE ON VARIOUS SOIL CONSTITUENTS IN ALFISOLS
Abstract
THE STUDY REPORTED HERE AIMED AT EVALUATING THE RELATIVE IMPORTANCE OF SOME SOIL CONSTITUENTS AFFECTING AGGREGATION AND AGGREGATE STABILITY OF RED MEDITERRANEAN SOILS (ALFISOLS). THE BINDING AND STABILIZING AGENTS STUDIED WERE: A) PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION, B) CLAY MINERALOGY, C) ORGANIC MATTER CONTENT D) CATION BRIDGES BETWEEN CLAY PARTICLES AND ORGANIC MATTER AND E) FE AND AL OXIDES, HYDROXIDES AND OXYHYDROXIDES. AGGREGATE SIZE AND THE EFFECT OF CULTIVATION ON AGGREGATE STABILITY WERE ALSO CONSIDERED. ALL SOILS HAD A HIGH AS AND THERE WAS A CLEAR TREND OF DECREASING AS WITH DECREASE AGGREGATE SIZE. VIRGIN SOILS HAD SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER AS THAN CULTIVATED SOILS .(SHORTENED)
