Risk factors for Parkinson's disease in greek population

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder of unknown etiology. It has been hypothesized that a combination of genetic and environmental factors may lead to nerve cell death and Parkinson’s disease. Numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted in various countries all over the world in this field, yielding controversial results. The purpose of this case-control study was to investigate various environmental, hereditary and individual risk factors in relation to PD in Greek subjects. We interviewed 201 PD patients and 442 unselected normal controls by means of a specially designed questionnaire. Living in a rural environment, drinking well water, exposure to pesticides/herbicides were not vigorously associated with PD, with the exception of a high OR (2.8) for the occupational pesticide/herbicide exposure in men before the age of 40 years.
