A KINETICS STUDY OF PHOSPHORUS DESORPTION FROM FOUR GREEK SOIL- DIFFUSION AS CONTROLLING THE RATE
Abstract
THE KINETICS OF PHOSPHATE DESORPTION FROM THE SOLID PHASE OF THE SOIL IS OF CONSIDERABLE IMPORTANCE FROM BOTH THE AGRONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL POINTS OF VIEW BUT PAPERS PUBLISHED ON THIS SUBJECT ARE BY FAR LESS NUMEROUS THAN THOSE RELATING TO THE THERMODYNAMICS OF THE PROCESS. THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION WAS DIRECTED TOWARDS FINDING AN EXPRESSION THAT WOULD ADEQUATELY DESCRIBE THE TIME DEPENDENCE OF PHOSPHATE DESORPTION FROM FOUR AGRICULTURALY IMPORTANT SOILS OF GREECE WITH CONTRASTING PROPERTIES. THE EXPRESSION SHOULD BE AMENABLE TO MECHANISTIC INTERPRETATIONS AND ENJOY MORE OR LESS GENERAL VALIDITY. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL ALL COMMONLY USED KINETIC EQUATIONS INCLUDING FUNCTIONAL RATE LAWS (ZERO, FIRST AND SECOND ORDER, AS WELL AS RESOLUTION OF THE KINETIC CURVE INTO THREE EXPONENTIALEXPRESSIONS) THE PARABOLIC LAW AND THE BANGHAM AND THE ELOVICH EQUATIONS, WERETESTED WITH OUR DATA AND FOUND INADEQUATE, WITH THE LAST TWO SHOWING SOME APPARENT SUCCESS.
