GLUCOSE AND INSULIN EFFECT ON LIVER GLYCOGEN METABOLISM
Abstract
GLUCOSE AND INSULIN EFFECT ON GLYCOGEN METABOLISM IS STUDIED DURING PERFUSION OF ISOLATED LIVER OF NORMAL AND DIABETIC RATS, WITH SEMI- SYNTHETIC PERFUSION MEDIUM: THE RESULTS ARE AS FOLLOW: 1) GLUCOSE IS INDUCING GLYCOGEN SYNTHETASE ACTIVATION OF SMALL DURATION. THE ACTION OF INSULIN ON SYNTHETASE IS SEEN WHEN THE ACTIVITY OF SYNTHETASE HAS REACHED A MAXIMAL LIVER DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF GLUCOSE. 2) INSULIN PREVENTS NOT ONLY THE GLUCOSE RELEASE FROM THE ISOLATED PERFUSED RAT LIVER, BUT ALSO THE GLUCOSE UPTAKE. IN IN VIVO EXPERIMENTS IN THE LIVER OF NORMAL RATS A FAST SHORT LIVED ACTIVATION OF GLYCOGEN SYNTHETASE IS EVIDENCED BY INSULIN ALONE, WITHOUT ADDITION OF GLUCOSE.
