This dissertation examines the trilogy Our Ancestors (I Nostri Antenati) by Italo Calvino, a work that marks the author's transition from Neorealism to fantastical and fairy tale fiction. The trilogy combines fantastical and fairy tale motifs with irony and allegory, while simultaneously incorporating historical, social, and ideological references. The three novels are examined through an intralingual analysis, while the first novel, Il Visconte Dimezzato (The Cloven Viscount), and the third novel, Il Cavaliere Inesistente (The Nonexistent Knight), are also investigated from an interlingual perspective. The aim of this research is to explore the narrative structure of the novels, the function of their allegorical and stylistic elements, and, with regard to the first and third novels, the ways in which these elements are rendered in Greek translation. The translation analysis focuses on these two novels because each has been translated into Greek twice, allowing for a comparative examination of different translation approaches. At the intralingual level, the analysis is based on Vladimir Propp's morphology of the folktale, as well as the principles developed by Max Lüthi and Axel Olrik, in order to identify fairy tale motifs and structural characteristics. The study examines the ways in which Calvino employs fairy tale elements and allegory to explore issues related to human nature, society, and historical reality, and investigates the function of irony as a central stylistic device throughout the trilogy. At the interlingual level, the research is grounded in the principles of Descriptive Translation Studies and applies a comparative analysis of the Greek translations of the first and third novels of the trilogy. Particular attention is given to the translation of fantastic, ironic, and culture specific elements. The analysis is informed by the theories of Peter Newmark, Mona Baker, Michel Ballard, and Jean René Ladmiralin order to investigate the translation strategies and techniques adopted, as well as the challenges involved in transferring stylistic and cultural features into Greek. The findings are systematically organised in tables, allowing for the classification of fairy tale elements alongside the corresponding translation choices in the two novels under examination and facilitating the identification of broader translation patterns and conclusions. This dissertation contributes to the integration of narratological and translation studies approaches by highlighting the relationship between fantasy, irony, allegory, and translation. In doing so, it offers a comprehensive interpretative framework for understanding Calvino's trilogy within the context of Greek literary reception and translation.
