The contribution of problem-posing activities to the development of the “seeking and using structure” habit of mind

Abstract

Problem posing has been recognized as an important and cognitively demanding process by the Mathematics Education research community. It is widely accepted that problem-posing activities can promote students’ conceptual understanding, enhance their ability to reason and communicate in a mathematical way by having their curiosity and their interest being challenged. Problem posing started attracting the attention of the research community since the 80’s and then more and more researchers started investigating the added contribution of problem posing in teaching and learning Mathematics. The purpose of this dissertation is to bridge two different areas in Mathematics education: Problem posing and Mathematical Habits of mind.
