Sports and media: the use of instagram by Greek female athletes and sports journalists

Abstract

The object of this doctoral thesis is to examine the way in which Greek female athletes and sports journalists use Instagram, in order to establish whether they have perceived its usefulness as a professional tool through which they can promote their work or if they use it as a means to display their personal lives. This study took into account previous researches in the field that defines Instagram as a self-presentation platform in which users can «construct» their own identity through the photos they post, the captions that accompany them, and the bio that they post and an important marketing tool at the same time. This dissertation examines whether female athletes and sports editors have recognized the dynamics of Instagram in order to use it professionally to their advantage.
