Specifics of interlanguage of greek learners of english as a foreign language

Abstract

Greek learners of English face many kinds of learning problems concerning the acquisition of the English sound system, grammar and vocabulary. The main purpose of the paper is to investigate the mistakes made by Greeks learning English in an attempt to identify the morpho-syntactic features of Greek Learners' Interlanguage(GEIL). The research is based on erroneous written language production in English attempting to find answers to the following research questions: 1) Which specific errors with high frequency are part of the GEIL?; 2) What is the difference between specific Greek errors and general errors committed by other foreign learners of English?; 3) Do each of these types of errors need different treatment in the process of English language learning? The completion of the basic aim involves the following steps: a)Identification of the most frequent errors; b) Classification of the errors; c)Identification of their possible causes; d) Assessment of their belonging to GEIL.
