Generalization of social anxiety to students of primary school in athletic and sporting situations: implications and coping strategies
Abstract
Research has shown that social anxiety generalizes to sporting and athletic situations. The first study explored the applicability of the Clark and Wells model of social anxiety to sport anxiety. Participants were students aged 11-13 years old. The other two preventions designed to help pre-adolescents to reduce their anxiety and their negative way of thiking before a stressful athletic situation. The first study also examined if sport anxiety can be related with social anxiety and the variables of Clark and Wells model (1995): negative performance attitudes, negative performance cognitions, anticipatory and post-event processing. The second study investigated if positive anticipatory thinking and distracion can reduce the social anxiety in a sample of pre-adolescents before a stressful sporting activity.
