Aim of this doctoral thesis is the development of nanostructured carbonaceous materials, by chemical vapor deposition of hydrocarbons on thin catalytic nanostructured films for photothermal and photonic applications. Therefore, this thesis includes carbonaceous materials with corresponding nanostructured carbon catalysts or metallic nanostructured catalysts for the growth of carbon nanotubes and graphene, respectively. Solar thermal harvesting and thermal power management are emerging as very competitive and high efficiency technologies in addition to the traditional PV and OPV sectors. Recently, a new technology has been developed for the synthesis of super black carbon nanotubes surfaces and proved their potential as a highly efficient in renewable energy technology. The scope is to study carbon-based nanostructured catalysts with Ni nanoparticles for the growth of CNTs for photothermal and photonic applications in large scale and with high efficiency and low-cost production. For the CNTs synthesis, was used low pressure thermal chemical vapor deposition method. However, the most essential issue for the CVD growth of CNTs is the used catalyst. Nanocomposite catalysts consisting of a carbon-based matrix and Ni nanoparticle inclusions were grown by Dual Cathode Magnetron Sputtering, Reactive Magnetron Sputtering and Pulsed Laser Deposition (non-hydrogenated α-C, hydrogenated α-C:H and Diamond Like Carbon DLC, respectively). The aim of this work is to study the efficiency of the carbon matrix (α-C, α-C:H, and DLC) of the catalysts in order to identify if such nanocomposites can be effective catalytic templates for CNT growth. Τhe thermal and electrical properties of CNTs allow them to be used in a variety of technological applications. In this thesis, an attempt was made to construct a Thin Film Gauge (TFG) using carbon nanotubes on a nanocomposite substrate and studying the enhancement of thermal and electrical conductivity with temperature. Also, the interaction of visible light with carbon nanotubes was studied by measuring their optical reflectivity in order to determine their use as light traps due to their black surface in photothermal collectors. Graphene growth was performed by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition on the surface of catalytic copper nanoparticles prepared by Electroless Metal Deposition (EMD) and Electrodeposition (ED). The morphological characteristics of copper catalytic substrates developed by the two methods and their effect on graphene growth were studied. One of the major assets of graphene is its potential of facile and straight forward surface functionalization and biofunctionalization, which enables its incorporation into the sensing technology. In fact, because of its electrical conductivity, as well as the existence of the active pz electrons, graphene is sensitive to the biochemical environment and so can be modulated by certain chemical species that bind on the surface of a graphene layer. On the other hand, plasmonic nanoparticles can provide exceptional sensing sensitivity via surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) but they usually lack the potential of surface functionalization. Therefore, a potential combination of plasmonic nanoparticles with graphene layers which are sufficiently thin in order to let the enhanced near-field around the particles making these materials candidate for photonic applications.
