Terracottes from hellenistic Crete: Knossos, Astritsi and Kamilari

Abstract

The subject of this Ph.D. thesis is to study the Terracotta figurines of the Hellenistic period from the sanctuaries of Demeter in Knossos and Kamilari, as well as the statuettes found accidentally in Astritsi. The objective of the thesis is twofold: firstly it aims to prove the unity of the workshops production in central Crete concerning the production of figurines, given that the figures discovered were highly resembled; secondly, it extracts conclusions about the iconographic unity of Demeter by comparing the figurines of both sanctuaries of Demeter referred above with those of her coming from Greece and Asia Minor. In order to attain this objective the thesis comprised both the isolated figurines and those stemming from mould series.The main chapters of this Ph.D. are: typology, technique, workshops, chronology and Iconography.The conclusions of the thesis are as follows:1.
