The micromammals of the Quaternary deposits from Cave A, Loutra Almopias ( Pella , Northern Greece): stratigraphy - taphonomy - paleoenvironment
Abstract
The present thesis involves the study of the micromammals recovered from two localities within the Loutra Almopias Cave. One fossiliferous horizon is located within the sediments of the cave floor (locality LAC) and the second one is located within the sediments of an elevated chamber (locality LAC Ia). After detailed excavation process and treatment of the sediments, thousands of micromammalian teeth and bones were yielded. The determinations have been based on the study of the morphological and metrical characteristics of 3209 specimens. 29 species have been recognised at the locality LAC (8 insectivores, 19 rodents, 2 lagomorphs) and 26 species at the locality LAC Ia (6 insectivores, 17 rodents, 3 lagomorphs). Seven of the identified species are described for the first time in fossil assemblages from Greece and seven species are not recorded in the extant fauna of Greece. The LAC and LAC Ia faunas are younger than the last interglacial period Riss-Würm, as suggested by the presence ...
