The use of bispectral index monitoring in carotid endarterectomy
Abstract
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) has been shown to be an effective treatment in patients with severe, symptomatic or asymptomatic, internal carotid stenosis. Intraoperative ischaemia during carotid cross-clamping is a major complication and prompt recognition of insufficient cerebral blood supply is crucial. None of the already existing forms of monitoring cerebral blood flow is believed to be the best, as none of these has 100% sensitivity or specificity. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible correlation of Bispectral Index Monitoring (BIS) with intraoperative cerebral ischaemia in CEA under general anaesthesia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, 40 patients were included, undergoing elective CEA for both symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis with shunting under general anesthesia.
