THE EFFECT OF FORMOTEROL, A NEW B2-AGONIST, IN THE PREVENTION OF EXERCISE-INDUCED ASTHMA IN CHILDREN
Abstract
IN THE FIRST PART THE EFFECT OF EXERCISE ON RESPIRATORY FUNCTION IS REVIEWED. THE POSSIBLE MECHANISMS AND FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE EXERCISE-INDUCED ASTHMA ARE EXAMINED, AS WELL AS DRUGS THAT PREVENT IT. WE THEN COMPARE IN A DOUBLE BLIND CROSSOVER STUDY THE PREVENTIVE EFFECT AND DURATION OF ACTION OF INHALED FORMOTEROL WITH THAT OF SALBUTAMOL, IN CHILDREN WITH EXERCISE-INDUCED BRONCHOSPASM. OUR RESULTS SHOW THAT FORMOTEROL PREVENTS EXERCISE-INDUCED ASTHMA FOR AT LEAST EIGHT HOURS. THIS IS A GREAT ADVANTAGE, ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN WITHUNPREDICTABLE ACTIVITIES, AS FEWER DOSES RESULT IN BETTER COMPLIANCE AND STABILIZATION OF THE RESPIRATORY FUNCTION.
