...........................................................................................

INTRODUCTION: Lead is one of the most health threatening factors in the modern world because of its toxic effects on the vulnerable fetuses, infants and young children. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to provide some evidence on the exposure to lead of nursing one month infants via breast milk in the population of west of Athens. MATERIAL: Lead concentration was estimated at birth in the umbilical cord blood, and one month after birth in mother’s milk and in infant’s blood in a cohort of 150 women aged 15-40 years and their infants. METHODS: Blood was withdrawn from the umbilical cord at delivery. Breast milk from the mother and blood from the newborn were collected one month later. The blood samples were stored in heparinized vacutaine tubes and kept at -20oC until analysis. Lead concentration was determined by atomic absorption with use of graphite furnace (Fernandez, FJ clin chem; 21, 558. 1975 ). Lead concentration was determined by atomic absorption with use of graphite furnace (Fernandez, FJ clin chem; 21, 558. 1975 ). Lead concentration in milk was determined by the same method (method of external quality control-clin check control-Recipe chemicals and instruments, GmbH, Munich, Germany). For the statistical evaluation of the data student’s t-test, x2 and regression analysis were used. Additional to the collection of blood and milk samples, a questionnaire was applied to each mother, providing information about mother’s age, way of delivery, birth weight, premature delivery or not, maternal ferrum and calcium intake, smoking habits, residence etc. RESULTS: Significant positive correlation was found between lead concentration in cord blood and in fetus blood (r=0.344 p<0.001), lead concentration in infant blood and weeks of gestation (r=0.195 p=0.017) as well as lead concentration in mother’s milk and cord blood (r=0.195 p=0.086). In the contrary, there was not found any significant correlation between lead concentration in fetus blood and breast milk (r=-0.072 p=0.381). Lead concentration in cord blood, in infant’s blood and in breast milk was not correlated to newborn’s sex, way of delivery, birth weight, number of birth and mother’s age. There was an important correlation between ferrum and calcium intake during pregnancy and lactation and the concentration of lead in infant’s blood. Lead concentration was lower in infants whose mothers took ferrum and calcium during both pregnancy and lactation than in infants whose mothers received ferrum or/and calcium only during gestation or only during lactation or received any at all. Another important finding was that lead concentration in infant’s blood was 1,292 times higher in newborns coming from families living in urban areas than in rural environments, while none correlation was found between lead concentration in umbilical cord blood, in infant’s blood and in breast milk and the age of the residence (new or old house). DISCUSSION: The health hazards of lead for the developing fetuses, the infants and the children have been proved beyond any doubt. It is also well known that fetuses can be exposed to lead during gestation as well as that this way of exposure can be minimized if pregnant women take ferrum and calcium supplements during pregnancy. Although breast milk seems unlikely to be a way of lead exposure for an infant, the risk can be even less if nursing mothers also take ferrum and calcium supplements during lactation. Brest milk is the best nutrition for a newborn and an infant and we must insure its safety.
