Basic element of the streams is that along with water, they carry sediments. Direct consequences of this process are the erosion and degradation of mountainous areas which possibly could lead to destruction of the lowland areas and gradual aggradation of reservoirs reducing their lifetime. The purpose of this research was the assessment of the erosion and aggradation in mountainous watersheds of streams that debouching into the artificial lake Polifito in the Prefecture of Kozani, North Greece by implementing modern tools to determine whether the reservoir is threatened by aggradation. The catchment basin of Polifitos’ reservoir covers an area of 847,76km2 which was divided into 31 smaller watersheds. In average, they extended in 120,22km2, while the smallest only in 1,59km2. There was a differentiation between the northern and the southern part of the catchment mainly because of the very rugged terrain of the southern part. The watersheds in the north (No. 1-13) were wider at lower altitudes and with less water flow comparing to the south’s watersheds (No. 14-31). The erosion - degradation model which was selected for the purposes of this research was the Gavrilovic Erosion Potential Method. The factors of this model were estimated in the Polifitos’ catchment level and all the processes have taken place in GIS, supported by remote sensing processes. In details, five factors were estimated for calculating the model: the total annual precipitation and mean annual air temperature (Kriging methods), the land covers (Landasat7), the geological background (analog geological maps) and the slopes of the surface (DEM). The model showed that the annual volume of sediments reaching the reservoir is 243.986,52 m3, while a great amount (58,9%) of initial producing sediments are held inside the watersheds. The northern watersheds seem to hold up 71% of the produced sediment, while the southern watersheds restrain the 49% of the initial sediments, mainly because of the large area occupied by forest in the south part and the smoother relief of the northern watersheds. The results of the soil erosion- degradation model were compared with similar surveys. It resulted that the implementation of new technologies to the initial assessments of the model’s factors reduces the overestimation errors. Additionally, the errors were also reduced by the determination of the sediments which lied inside the mountainous watersheds and not inside the artificial lake. The risk of Polyfitos reservoir’s aggradation is visible, but not immediate.
