Interaction mechanisms of natural organic substances and soluble metals
Abstract
Humic substances constitute the major part of Natural Organic Matter (NOM) in natural systems. They are characterized by a strong binding capacity for both metals and organic pollutants, affecting their mobility and bioavailability in the environment. The current doctoral thesis aims to study the ability of humic substances to bind metals under different conditions in order to clarify the interaction mechanisms and to predict their behaviour in natural systems. For that purpose, the contemporary bibliography was investigated and a series of experiments were carried out which initially study the humic acidic character and subsequently, the binding of metal ions Cu2+, Cd2+ and Ca2+ to humic substances of different origin. More specifically the main factors/parameters studied are the nature and the concentration of humic substance, the pH and ionic strength of the solution, the presence of competitive cations and the presence of UV or solar radiation.
