The purpose of the work presented in this thesis is the investigation of dynamic properties of natural soils from Greece and Cyprus in the resonant-column aparratus. Specifically, the shear modulus, G, and shear damping ratio, DT, of inorganic and organic, as well as compacted soils, were determined and the effect of various parameters, such as effective isotropic stress, shear strain, plasticity, soil composition and structure, on the above properties was studied. The availability of a relative large number of data for natural soils allowed the establishment of empirical correlations between dynamic and physical properties, allowing thus the establishment of a database. In particular, such correlationships were established for the small-strain shear modulus, Gmax, the damping ratio, DTmin, the variation of shear modulus, G, and damping ratio, DT, with shear strain, and excess pore water pressure development, Δu, during dynamic loading. The most important parameters affecting shear modulus, G, and damping ratio, DT, are shear strain, γ, void ratio, e, effective isotropic stress, σ΄ο, soil composition and structure. The following general form equation can be used to describe shear modulus, G. ()()()()ofefAGσγγ?••= (1) At small strains (10-7-10-6), equation (1) takes the following form for inorganic non-cohesive soils. ()2max2.171onooeGAeσ??=••+ (2) where parameters Αο and nο depend on grain size distribution, shape, size, angularity and mineral composition of soil grains, fines content, gravels, calcareous content e.t.c.. Moreover, for sands containing fines the granular void ratio, eg, was found to describe better the effect of void ratio and fines content on Gmax. For cohesive soils (inorganic-organic-compacted), the following relationship for Gmax is proposed. 0.546max1.0982900oGeσ?=• (3) where Gmax and σ΄ο are in kPa. Low values of DΤmin (0.3-4.8 %) were determined for all soils tested with void ratio higher than 0.5, exept of an undisturbed sand with layered structure that gave much higher values of DΤmin (3.3%-8.5%). The lower limit of DΤmin values was determined for inorganic clean sands, while higher values were calculated for sands with fines or/and calcareous content, cohesive soils as well as organic soils. The range of DΤmin values becomes wider (1.15-9.8 %) for soils with void ratio less than 0.5, and the higher values (DΤmin>5%) are for inorganic cohesive soils, which also contained gravels or/and concretions, as well as compacted soils with plasticity index higher than 10%. An effect of σ΄ο on G and DT values, which depends on strain level, is observed for all three soil categories tested (inorganic, organic and cohesive). The effect of σ΄ο on Gmax is given in equations (2) and (3), while is negligible on DTmin. In the non-linear shear strains zone, G/Gmax-γ and DT-γ curves varry with σ΄ο for all non-cohesive soils, as well as low-plasticity soils and peats with layered structure, at stresses smaller than in-situ mean effective stress. In particular, G/Gmax decreases and DT increases at a given shear strain, γ, as σ΄ο decreases. For all cohesive soils tested (inorganic, organic and compacted) both the degradation and position of G/Gmax-γ curves depend on soil plasticity. The elastic strain region expands and the variation of stiffness with γ decreases as PI increases. A relationship correlating G/Gmax with PI and γ is proposed and the estimated G/Gmax-γ curves are given for inorganic cohesive soils. The relationships between (DT-DTmin) and G/Gmax for both non-cohesive (inorganic and organic) and cohesive (inorganic, organic and compacted) soils determine a narrow band, which is independent of soil type. The range of elastic threshold shear strain, γte, values is similar for all inorganic, organic and compacted cohesive tested soils. It varies between 5x10-6 and 1.7x10-4 and increases with plasticity index. For inorganic non-cohesive soils γte varies between 5x10-6 and 4x10-5, while higher values (6x10-6-8.5x10-5) were determined for organic non-cohesive soils. Peats generally exhibit elastic behaviour at a wider strain range than all the rest inorganic and organic tested soils. The range of γte values for peats varies between 1.6x10-5 and 1.8x10-4. The range of volumetric threshold shear strain, γtv, values for both non-cohesive inorganic and organic soils varies between 6x10-5 and 5x10-4 (the higher than 2.2x10-4 values are for organic soils only). Finally, a discussion on the practical implications of the results of the thesis for geotechnical engineering studies and in particular the earthquake resistance design is presented. The Hellenic region is considered an area of high seismicity. Therefore, the results of this work are expected to contribute to the design of safer as well as more economic structures in the region.
