THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE UNDER COMBINED TENSION COMPRESSSION

Abstract

THE PROBLEM OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF CONCRETE SUBJECT TO COMBINED TENSION-COMPRESSION IS TACKLED, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL,THUS AIMING TO ESTABLISH A RELIABLE STRENGTH ENVELOPE. THE THESIS IS PRESENTEDIN TWO PARTS, A AND B . IN PART A THE THEORETICAL BASIS OF THE SUBJECT IS INVESTIGATED, SEARCHING THE SOURCE OF STRENGTH, I.E. THE INTERNAL MICROCRACKING OF CONCRETE. MATRIX-AGGREGATE MICRO CRACKING IS EXAMINED, FOCUSING ON THE PARAMETERS OF BOND-STRENGTH. FRACTURE MECHANICS AND STATISTICAL STRENGTH THEORIES, THE TOOLS OF THE EXAMINATION ON THE SUB- PHENOMENOLOGICAL LEVEL, ARE USED TO JUSTIFY THE S- SHAPED EXPERIMENTAL STRENGTH ENVELOPE, IN THE Σ1.Σ2<0 QUADRANT OF BIAXIAL STRESS STATES. FINALLY, ON THE PHENOMENOLOGICAL LEVEL, A FRACTURE CRITERION OF MAXIMUM TENSILE STRAIN IS PROPOSED, THE USE OF WHICH LEEDS TO THE SAME AS ABOVE STRENGTH ENVELOPE. IN PART B, EXPERIMENTAL WORK CARRIED OUT IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE THESIS IS PRESENTED. (SHORTENED)
